How to Create a Humid Environment for Your Houseplants

If you have houseplants, you know that they can be a bit of a delicate balance. They need just the right amount of sunlight, water, and nutrients to thrive—and sometimes, that can be a lot harder than it sounds. One thing that many people don't realize is that humidity is also an important factor in keeping your plants healthy. In fact, some plants require high humidity levels to survive. So, how do you create a humid environment around your houseplants? Here are a few tips.

But first, What is Humidity Anyway?

Humidity is a measurement of water vapour in the air at any given location. If you have ever heard the term “relative humidity,” it refers to the amount of water in the air related to the max amount of water vapour. It is important to remember that higher temperatures allow for more water vapour in the air, so the chilly temperatures in the winter are not ideal for increased humidity.

The best methods for increasing humidity for your plants:

    -Use a pebble tray:

Place your plant on a tray filled with pebbles and water. The water will evaporate and increase the humidity around the plant. Just be sure to replenish the water as needed so that the pebbles don't dry out.

    -Mist your plants:

Misting your plants with water is another easy way to increase the humidity around them. Just be careful not to mist too much, as this could cause mold or mildew to grow on your plants. A good rule of thumb is to mist once a day or every other day.

    -Group your plants together:

When you group your plants together, they create their own microclimate and help each other retain moisture. This is especially effective if you have plants that prefer different temperature or light levels—you can create different zones within your group of plants to keep everyone happy.

    -Indoor Greenhouses:

Sometimes this can be the best option if you have really dry air. Indoor greenhouses are affordable and easy to set up. They can be near a bright window or placed anywhere with the utilization of a grow light. By collecting plants together in a semi-closed space, moisture is retained in their environment.

By following these simple tips, you can create a humid environment around your houseplants that will help them thrive. Just remember to monitor your plants closely and make adjustments as needed—every plant is different and will have different moisture needs. With a little trial and error, you'll find the perfect balance for your green friends in no time!
